Ronald M. Egalka

Biography


Ronald Egalka is the former president, chief executive officer and chief investment officer of Rampart Investment Management Company, Inc., the firm that he co-founded in 1983. In 2012, Rampart was sold and became an investment management affiliate of Virtus Investment Partners (NASDAQ: VRTS).  Mr. Egalka continued as President until October 2015 when he began serving the firm in an ongoing advisory capacity.  Effective March 31, 2017, Ron ended his relationship with both Rampart and Virtus.

For more than three decades, Ron oversaw the conception, development and implementation of Rampart’s investment strategies and tactics. He created or contributed to a variety of analytical and investment management tools, including the Rampart Time Premium Index®, published weekly in Barron’s; the Rampart Volatility Indexes®; and the Rampart Options Management System (ROMS®), one of the proprietary options technology platforms used exclusively by Rampart’s portfolio managers to execute the company’s equity and index option strategies.

Ron was a founding director of the Boston Computer Society, charter member of the National Options and Futures Society and a Founder of the Boston Options Society. From 1973 to 1981, Mr. Egalka was a portfolio manager, fund manager and senior research officer at The Boston Company, specializing in hedged equity strategies. In 1981, he joined Colonial Management Associates as a portfolio and fund manager, where he developed and managed an options-based open-end mutual fund and many of the company’s portfolio hedging capabilities.

He was a member of the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) Institutional Investor Advisory Committee, is a life trustee of the U.S.S. Constitution Museum in Charlestown, MA and a board director of the New England Racing Museum in Loudon, NH. During his investment management career, he was frequently quoted in the business and financial press about volatility, options, and trends in options investment, including in The Financial Times, The Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg News (and TV), Reuters, and Pensions & Investments. Ron was a lecturer on derivatives at Boston College and Boston University, and was a regular presenter at the annual Risk Management Conference sponsored by the CBOE.

Ron served in the U.S. Army and U.S. Army Reserves. He is a graduate of the Harvard Business School and the Boston University Questrom School of Business. He began his career in the investment industry in 1971.
